„Saint Dumitru” Church
This church is a foundation of Matei Basarab and it dates since 1651-1652. The construction of this church was made after a plan cross shaped, having a verandah opened. After the earthquake in 1833 it was renewed in 1885. Also, here you can find the relics of Saint Tatiana.
Casa Baniei
Was built in 1699 at the initiative of Constantin Brancoveanu; it is the oldest civil construction in Craiova and one of the oldest architectural monuments of this kind in Romania. In 1750 it was used as a romanian school in Craiova. At the moment it shelters The Ethnography Museum and Popular Art.
Casa Glogoveanu
It’s a construction built on a rectangular plan, with specific traditional elements and a sober architecture; it belongs to Glogoveni noblemen. In this house lived for a while Tudor Vladimirescu. Between 1913 -1949 the Mayoralty of Craiova had it’s headquarters. At the moment here we can find The Court of Dolj district.
Casa Jianu
It was built at the end of the XVIIIth century by the Jianu family. This house was built on a rectangular plan on two levels; it was renewed in 1918.
Cula Poenaru
It was built in 1764 an Almaj and it was decorated with fresco painting, inpired by Escop fables."
Popova Fountain
This fountain was built in 1613 after a square plan; on the S and V sides were made 2 inscriptions, one with Latin letter, other with Cyrillic letters. In 1651 Matei Basarab remade it and that’s why today it’s known as The Basarabesti’s Fountain.
Bucovat Monastery
Was built in 1512 and remade in 1572 by Stefan, the son of Parvu and painted in 1574. The monastery construction was made from bricks and it has an heptagonal altar. At the moment the monastery operates as Theological Seminar of Craiova Archbishopric.
Jitianu Monastery
Jitianu Monastery is a monk monastery; it was built in 1658 and suffered many repairing between 1701 – 1932. Today in this monastery we can find a collection of valuable pictures on wood and glass. In the courtyard can be found a mulberry plantation.
Ciurumela Forest
It’s a forest reservation which can be found in Poiana Mare. It is famous and appreciated for it’s wooden content and the dimmension of the trees, unique in Europe.
Mayoralty
Another important construction is the former Bank of Commerce, now the Municipal Council of Craiova. It was projected by Ion Mincu and finished in 1916 by he’s student - Constantin Iotzu.
Prefecture
It’a an interesting construction, robust, with popular architectonic characters, is the former Administrative Palace, today the headquarters of the Prefecture and The council of Dolj dictriv. It’s a production of Petre Antonescu, and was realized between 1912-1913.
Romanescu Park
Was realized after E. Redont plans between 1900 -1903; it’s one of the bigest and most beautiful parks in Romania (90 ha). Here were arranged hothouses, an island lake, statues, a zoo and a beautiful pendent bridge.
Ornitologica reservation
Ornitologica reservation can be found in Ciupercenii Noi; this reservation is the only place in lunca Dunarii undamed. Here can be found many species of birds such as: Egretta garzetta, Ardea purpurea, Ciconia nigra, Podiceps cristatus, Anas strepera and many others.
Paleontologica reservation
It is located near Craiova, in a place where is found an important fossiliferous point, with a rich fossil fauna of jellyfish shells; it dates since Paleolitic.
University of Craiova
Was planed in 1890 by Ion Socolescu and constructed instead of The Justice Palace.
Libraries
The first library in Craiova was founded in 1840. From all the libraries we mention Districtal Librarie „Alexandru and Aristia Aman”, Universitary Librarie which lodges The Germany library and The French Library „Omnia”.
Cinematography
Cinematography appeared recently in Craiova; after only 2 years after the first performance in this area in the word, realized by the Lumiere brothers in Paris, in Craiova was presented short films. The interest was very big and that’s why until 1915 in Craiova existed 5 cinemas already.
Palace
One of the most famous palace in Craiova is Jean Mihail Palace (now The Art Museum); it was built in 1907 by Paul Gottereau. This palace was built for Constantin Mihail, one of the richest men in Romania at that time. For it’s construction were used the best construction materials at that time and was created a grace and refinement impression.
